Bupropion

Generic: bupropion hydrochloride  ·  Brand: Wellbutrin® / Wellbutrin XL®  ·  Class: Non-Stimulant — NDRI (Off-Label for ADHD)
ADHD Non-Stimulant Depression Co-occurring Not Controlled
🧠

How It Works

Bupropion is a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI) and the only antidepressant used off-label for ADHD with meaningful evidence. It boosts dopamine and norepinephrine — the same neurotransmitters targeted by stimulants — but through reuptake inhibition rather than release, resulting in a gentler and less stimulating effect. It is not FDA-approved for ADHD but has multiple positive clinical trials supporting its use. It is not a controlled substance, has no abuse potential, and is particularly useful when ADHD co-occurs with depression, anxiety, or when stimulants are not appropriate.

What It Treats

ADHD (off-label)Multiple clinical trials support effectiveness — particularly useful when stimulants are contraindicated
ADHD with DepressionTreats both conditions simultaneously — a major advantage
ADHD with Substance UseNot controlled, also FDA-approved for smoking cessation
Stimulant IntoleranceAlternative when stimulants cause intolerable anxiety, tics, or cardiovascular effects
