Buspirone
Generic: buspirone hydrochloride · Brand: Buspar® · Class: Anxiolytic — Azapirone (Non-Benzodiazepine)
🧠
How It Works
Buspirone is a non-benzodiazepine anxiolytic that works by acting as a partial agonist at serotonin 5-HT1A receptors and a partial antagonist at dopamine D2 receptors. Unlike benzodiazepines, it does not enhance GABA activity, does not cause sedation, and has no abuse potential or dependence risk. It works gradually over 2–4 weeks — not immediately — making it suitable for ongoing anxiety management rather than acute relief. It is the preferred long-term treatment for Generalized Anxiety Disorder when an as-needed medication is not appropriate.

Buspirone is not a quick fix — it requires 2–4 weeks to work. Patients who expect immediate relief like a benzodiazepine are often disappointed. Consistency is key. It has absolutely no abuse potential and is safe for long-term use.
