Frequently Asked Questions

You've got questions.
We've got answers.

Whether you're a parent, a teen doing your own research, or a young adult figuring out next steps — we're here to make this feel less overwhelming.

  • Child and adolescent psychiatry is a medical specialty focused on diagnosing and treating mental, emotional, and behavioral conditions in young people. At Rooted Minds, we provide psychiatric evaluations, medication management when appropriate, and close collaboration with therapists and schools.

💡 Psychiatric nurse Preactitionerscan prescribe medication, which psychologists and therapists typically cannot. We work alongside therapists — not instead of them.

  • Initial evaluations are typically 60–90 minutes. This time allows us to really get to know your child or young person — their history, their strengths, what's been hard, and what they hope to feel like. We never want to rush this. Follow-up appointments are usually 30–45 minutes depending on the type of visit.

  • We work with a wide range of mental health conditions in children, adolescents, and young adults, including:

Mood disorders — depression, bipolar disorder, dysthymia
Anxiety disorders — generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder, separation anxiety
ADHD — attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder across presentations
    OCD — obsessive-compulsive disorder
Trauma — PTSD and trauma-related conditions
Neurodevelopmental — autism spectrum, learning differences
Behavioral concerns — oppositional behaviors, emotional dysregulation
Life transitions — school stress, identity, grief, family changes

🌱 Not sure if what you're seeing fits a diagnosis? That's okay — we're here to help you figure it out together.

  • Both! For younger children (roughly under 10), much of the visit involves the parent, and we might talk and play with the child together. For older kids, we typically spend some time with both parent and child together, and some time just with the child so they feel free to share their own perspective. We always want children to feel like they have a voice — not just their parents speaking for them.

  • No — we will never push medication. Medication is one tool among many, and it's always a decision made carefully and collaboratively with families. For many children, especially younger ones, non-medication approaches like therapy, school supports, and family strategies are the first line of support. When medication is considered, we explain the options, risks, benefits, and alternatives clearly — and we don't move forward unless the family feels comfortable and informed.

🌱 Your family's values and comfort level matter deeply to us. We follow your lead.Is my child too young for medication?

  • This is one of the most important questions teens ask, and it deserves a real answer. We take your privacy seriously. What you share in session is generally kept confidential from your parents. However, there are limits to confidentiality — if we're genuinely concerned about your safety or the safety of someone else, we may need to involve a parent or other support. We'll talk with you openly about what those limits are so there are no surprises. Our goal is for you to feel safe enough to be honest.

🔒 We won't secretly report everything back to your parents. We want you to trust us — and that means being upfront with you.

  • You are welcome here exactly as you are. We are affirming of all gender identities and sexual orientations. Questioning your identity is not a disorder — it's part of being human. If you want to talk about it, we're here to listen. If you don't, we won't push. We follow your lead, always.

🌈 You deserve care from providers who respect and affirm who you are. That's what we're committed to.

  • It depends on where you are in your care. After an initial evaluation, follow-up visits are typically every 4–8 weeks when things are stable. If you're starting a new medication or going through a harder time, we may see you more frequently at first. Once things are going well, many patients move to quarterly check-ins. We'll always work with your schedule and talk through what makes sense.
