🧠

How It Works

Hydroxyzine is a first-generation antihistamine with significant anxiolytic and sedative properties. It works by blocking histamine H1 receptors and also has activity at serotonin and muscarinic receptors, contributing to its calming effect. Unlike benzodiazepines, it has no abuse potential, no dependence risk, and is not a controlled substance. It works quickly — within 30–60 minutes — making it useful for acute anxiety and situational anxiety. The sedating effect is consistent and does not diminish with repeated use the way benzodiazepines do.
