🧠

How It Works

Lurasidone is a second-generation (atypical) antipsychotic that selectively blocks dopamine D2 and serotonin receptors. It is notable for its favorable metabolic profile — it causes minimal weight gain and has little effect on blood sugar or cholesterol compared to other antipsychotics. It is one of the few antipsychotics FDA-approved specifically for bipolar depression, both as monotherapy and as adjunct to lithium or valproate. It must be taken with food (at least 350 calories) to achieve adequate absorption.
