Vilazodone
Generic: vilazodone hydrochloride · Brand: Viibryd® · Class: SPARI
🧠
How It Works
Vilazodone is a serotonin partial agonist and reuptake inhibitor (SPARI). Like an SSRI, it blocks serotonin reuptake — but it also acts as a partial agonist at serotonin 5-HT1A receptors, similar to buspirone (an anti-anxiety medication). This dual action is thought to provide faster anxiety relief and potentially fewer sexual side effects than traditional SSRIs. It is FDA-approved for major depressive disorder and is a good option when sexual side effects from other antidepressants have been problematic.
✅
What It Treats
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)FDA-approved; effective for depression with or without anxiety features
Generalized AnxietyThe 5-HT1A partial agonism provides additional anti-anxiety effects
Depression with Sexual Side Effect ConcernsMay have fewer sexual side effects than traditional SSRIs for some patients

Important Safety Information
Black Box Warning (under 25): Antidepressants may increase risk of suicidal thinking in children, adolescents, and young adults especially in the first few weeks. Monitor closely and contact us right away if new or worsening thoughts of self-harm appear.
Serotonin Syndrome: Can occur when combined with MAOIs, triptans, tramadol, or St. John's Wort. Signs include fever, agitation, rapid heart rate, and muscle twitching — seek emergency care immediately.
Drug Interactions: Do not take with MAOIs. Always share your full medication list with your provider.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Discuss risks and benefits with your provider. Do not stop without consultation.
Food Requirement: Vilazodone must be taken with food. Without food, absorption drops by about 50% and the medication will not work as intended. This is one of the most important instructions for this medication.
